It’s Raining, It’s Pouring…..

By Alip @alisonpikeGD

No snoring here, no rest for the wicked!  In fact what I am mostly doing is moaning about the weather.  We Brits love a bit of weather to keep us in conversation.  It is however effecting my work and I am truly fed up of all this rain.

I thought I would come up with the top 5 jobs to do when it is raining.  By jobs I do not mean being a lifeguard on a sun drenched beach (my mind wanders), I mean garden related jobs you can be carrying out in your own shed.

  1. Tidy your shed, a little dull but satisfying when it is complete.  Clean & sharpen your tools, wipe their metal surfaces with an oily rag and apply linseed oil to any wooden handles.
  2. Bird feeders often get neglected but it is important to clean them out regularly, take this opportunity and give them a good clean.  For more advice see this link RSPB.
  3. Catch up with any potting on you need to do under the cover of your shed or greenhouse.  My penstemon cuttings are coming along nicely so I will take this opportunity to get into the shed and pot them on into individual pots.
  4. Feeding borders, I know you will have to put on your coat for this one but it won’t take long and the rain will help it work its way down to the roots where it is needed.  I use organic chicken pellets but there are lots of other feeds out there to choose from.
  5. Go shopping.  Stock up on all those gardening bits and pieces you need. Gloves, horticultural grit, feed, weedkiller, place bulk orders for bark and make sure you have wellies top of the list!

If none of these jobs take your fancy why not just sit back with a cup of tea, your gardening books and magazines and a note pad to jot down all those must have plants.
