Interview with Josh Aubry from the Cherry Dolls

With two critically acclaimed EPs under their belt, the Cheey Dolls have delivered another sonic missile 'Slave' in advance of their highly anticipated debut album. Tomatrax caught up with Josh Aubry to ask a few questions.

How did the band form?
I started the band in early 2014. It was just a friend & I froffing out over The Clash at a nightclub getting too drunk and being in a studio the next morning. We ended up booking in a show at Ding Dong for the following week before we even had a set. Found 2 other members and ended up selling out the show. It was quite funny actually.

Where did the name Cherry Dolls come from?
I was watching a video of kings of leon at big day out in 2007. There drummer had a cherry on his kick and I accidentally mumbled The Cherry Dolls. It eventually stuck.

You have your debut album coming out soon, how will it compare with your previous releases?
I think we finally nailed on the head what we were going for. Previous releases we were going through a lot of shit with members and disagreements. But this record just seemed to flow and we were all on the same page.
I mean we pretty much wrote recording and finished the whole Record in a week. It was a magical moment for us.

After a couple of EP releases, what made you decide to put out a full length album this time round?
We didn't mean to. It just happened. We were initial meant to record an EP. But I was set in the studio that we could do an Album and it just came out. I think we are all glad we did go ahead with a full length.

Do you know what the album will be titled?
VIVA LOS DOLLS

What made you pick 'Slave' as the album's single?
It stood out like a sore thumb. We wanted the main tracks of this album to sound like The Clash & The Ramones were having a street fight. I think Slave was the anthem to that idea.

You're about to tour Australia, what can fans expect from your show?
Our show has changed a lot since we last toured. We are focusing more on playing the songs rather then going crazy. We have really tightened the ship and feel as if we have matured as a live band. But don't worry the chaos is still there, just at the right times now.

Do you ever listen to your own music?
New stuff we have done, I feel you write and record music because you want to hear what your musically soul desires and you want other people experience it with you. So if you can't listen to your own music it isn't what you really want to be writing.

What other music do you listen to?
The boys listen to everything from The Clash to Hall & Oates. Biggie Smalls to Jimi Hendrix. I myself am loving Bad Dreems & Queens of the stone age.

What do you have planned following your upcoming tour?
More touring. A few of the boys are going travelling for a few weeks so Jim & I might start writing the new record. Or just sinking beers and pretending to write.
