Interview with Adam Dooker from Ruiins

Gold Coast based duo the Ruiins are excited to announce the upcoming release of their debut single 'Eventually'. Tomatrax caught up with Adam Dooker, vocalist and drummer from the band , to ask a few questions.

How did the band form?

We had been playing music together in other bands since we were 16. Pat got his first electric guitar about 2 years ago and we were both living on the Gold Coast and just wanted to start jamming again. We entered a band Comp and had to come up with a name so it all just started from there!

Where did the name the RUIINS come from?

The RUIINS came from the name of a place in our hometown that is pretty special to the both of us.

You've just released your first single, what's it like to have it out?

It feels good!! It's been a long time coming and a lot of hassling from our friends and people who have seen us play wondering when we were going to release some material.

What made you pick 'Eventually' as your first release?

Our sound has developed from our live performances - we didn't decide from the start how we wanted to sound so Eventually was chosen as we feel it best reflects our live sound and performance

What was the inspiration behind the singles cover?

We found the artwork snooping through a friends social media. It stuck out the most to us, We like that it's a simple concept but catches your eye ;)

You've entered the track on Triple J's Unearthed page, has this had any impact on your music's exposure?

Yeah definitely! We got our first play on triple j soon after it was uploaded to triple j unearthed so that was a really good start. Since then we've had rotation on unearthed radio and Richard Kingsmill played it on his 2016 program which was amazing!

You've just done a tour round the east coast of Australia, how did that go?

The tour is going really well. We played some shows in Sydney that were super fun, played with some really good bands too! It's refreshing and exciting to play new venues with bands we haven't played with before. Our local gig in Coolangatta (where we are based now) the other night got shut down! There was to many people in the venue and liquor licensing cut us off. Was a good show though :)

What's the music scene on the GC like?
It's not great, there are so many good bands on the coast and very little places to play. There's some cool venues slowly opening though and compared to our hometown a lot more going on haha

Do you ever listen to your own music?
We listen to our demos/ sketchy iPhone recordings just to structure songs, and change melodies etc.. But after the song is finished no, not really :)

What other music do you listen to?
It depends on the place and the vibe. We both work in retail so we get to listen to music all day and the playlists are a mix of what you hear on triple j and old bangers.
If it's a relaxing arvo or evening maybe spin some old vinyl

Now that your single is out, what do you plan on doing next?

Next for the RUIINS is a few more shows before we head overseas for a month then back to release a new single then play a whole bunch of shows!
