How to Audit Your Website for Greater Search Results

Posted on the 30 March 2015 by Andreaantal @andreaeantal

Conducting a regular website content audit can greatly impact your ongoing Internet marketing strategy. A proper review of your content will illustrate where and how you can optimize the effectiveness of your website and social media tools in order to boost targeted traffic.

This may seem daunting, but it's not all doom and gloom! It'll also show you the areas in which you're excelling.

Reviewing your content involves the following:

  • SEO review for technical issues
  • Website design & layout, including title tags and meta descriptions
  • Copywriting and keyword review
  • Ease of use and experience from a customer's perspective
  • Social media marketing review and recommendations to maximize Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.

Whether you're a novice or a pro, site audits can tell you about SEO pitfalls that may be hindering your search results and the overall success of your online campaign.

Site audits give you a full, accurate and current picture of how you compare.

Depending on your budget, there are several firms that can conduct a thorough audit for you, but be sure to choose a partner that can provide targeted solutions in line with your business, market and audience. For your audit to be meaningful in any way, it must be fully customized to your business and your buyers, otherwise you're wasting your money.

Alternatively, you can do it on your own for free. Check out Quick Sprout's post on How to Conduct a Content Audit on Your Site, written by co-founder of Crazy Egg, Hello Bar, and KISSmetrics, Neil Patel.

Patel outlines an easy-to-follow method, including:

  • Time: Typically one to two hours.
  • Tools: Google Drive Spreadsheet and Google Analytics.
  • Personnel: You. If the task is huge, get a few people with a moderate level of skill and language facility to help you.
  • Technical skill level: Medium to low. If you have low technical ability, don't worry. Once you do the first few pages, you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly.
  • Writing skill level: Average ability in the target language.
  • Amount of boring and mind-numbing work: Medium.

Plan to conduct your site audits regularly on a quarterly, twice per annum, or annual basis, depending on the size of your business. Be sure to benchmark and measure for improvements over time.
