This tea can also be named as செம்பருத்தி பூ டீ in Tamil, karkade tea, Jamaica tea, and agua de Jamaica.

I love the mild sour and tart taste of the tea. The dark red color of the tea after infusing the flower will appeal to your eyes.when mixing lemon & honey, the dark maroon will change to lovely red |. I love the way to consume this tea with mild sweetness along with honey.

These kinds of infused herbal drinks are named "tisane" which means dried flowers, fragrant herbs, fruits, bark, leaves, and other parts are steeped in hot water and drink with its medicinal value.

Some of the variation you may try:

  • In place of honey, you can have with sugar or jaggery. And the levels for your taste buds C.
  • This hot tea can also be served as chilled that is hibiscus iced tea. Keep the infused drink in the refrigerator for 30 mins to an hour, add some ice cubes and mint leaves before serving.
  • Dried hibiscus flowers and powdered is available in shops. We can use that also if we don't get fresh flowers.

I was planned to add the method in this video & post itself. I couldn't make it. For sure I add a separate one with interesting recipes with it. Meanwhile, the below tips will help you to prepare yourself.

  • The fresh flowers should be washed and dry in the sunshade.do not dry in direct sunlight.
  • When you dry the flowers in the shadow of the sun, it will take 4 to 5 days to completely dry.
  • After it gets dried, you can store in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
  • If you are residing in cold countries and not possible to dry, keep the flowers at room temperature. Once the flowers get shrunk, you can preserve in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 days.

health benefits of hibiscus tea:

This tea is good to treat cholesterol and high blood pressure. Hibiscus is a vitamin c rich flower it helps to treat anxiety. The antioxidants and minerals in the flower will help for it. Good for digestion and to boost the immune system. You are in a weight loss diet, include this drink in your schedule for twice a week.

Initially, Africans used this flower to treat heart diseases & to reduce body temperature. I too heard that regular consumption of fresh flowers steeped in water or simply eating 2 to 3 flowers in an empty stomach will lower the risk of heart diseases and irregular menstrual problems. But I never and experienced it. Write to me in the comments if you are aware of this point. Then it must be helpful for me and many like me 😊

Side effects of hibiscus tea:

As much as we have health benefits in this tea, it has some side effects also if we consume more. Not only this hibiscus tea, " too much of anything is good for nothing" "அளவுக்கு மிஞ்சினால் அமிர்தமும் நஞ்சு" follow on that proverb, it is good to consume limited like 2 to 3 times maximum in a week.

As I already mentioned, it is good to treat high blood pressure and blood sugar. There is a chance to lower the normal level if we consume more.

Studies say that pregnant & breastfeeding women should avoid consuming this tea. The reason is, it will affect the estrogen level of the body.

Hallucination is one of the side effects. But it is said to be very rare.

how to make hibiscus tea recipe:

  1. Pick 6 to 7 numbers of fresh flowers or dried ones. Remove the green part(sepal) around the flower . Then remove the center thick stem-like one called a pistil.
  2. After doing this in all flowers, place it in a teapot or jar. Pour 2 cups of boiling water.
  3. Steep for 5 mins closed with a lid.
  4. Remove the lid after 5 mins, at this time all the essence of flowers will get infused in water.
  5. So remove the flowers from tea. Squeeze lemon juice in it.
  6. Add sugar or honey or jaggery level for your taste. Give a quick mix. Now your herbal tea is ready to serve as hot!
