With a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, the diamond is the hardest material found in nature. This impressive hardness is even reflected in its name, derived from the Greek word “adámas”, which means “invincible”. Over the years it evolved into the English “diamond”. This unique degree of hardness has long evoked associations with permanence and eternity.
From the depths of the Earth
Diamonds were formed around one to three billion years ago in the depths of the Earth. They arose under high pressure some 150 km deep within the Earth’s crust, where temperatures reach up to 1000 degrees Celsius. The diamond is an extraordinary gemstone: made up of 99.95 percent carbon, it is the only gem that is comprised of a single element. According to historical records, the first diamonds were mined in India. Today many diamonds are found in Africa, Australia, Canada and Russia.
