With so many hotels in Macau, the variety of choice in food is endless. A recent visit to the Grand Lapa Macau, to meet with two wonderful hosts Carmel Yeung Director of Communication and Keira Lee Communications Manager who offered a day of authentic food from this truly well established hotel. Carmel had a brilliant lunch idea at the Café Bela Vista to give us an authentic taste of Portugal with the Portuguese Snack Sampler Platter – Bacalhau balls, Portuguese cured ham, Macanese mushroom crab cake, shrimp rissoles, Macanese vegetarian samosa, assorted Portuguese sausages with pickled vegetables, marinated olive and garlic toast.

Sharing food like this always keeps the conversation going, we talked about the history of the Grand Lapa Hotel and how the Café Bela Vista itself reflects the view from what was once the actual Bela Vista Hotel. Constructed around 1870 the Bela Vista is now the official residence of the Portuguese Consul, and effectively out of bounds to tourists. To get the flavor of Macau visit the Café Bela Vista and try the Portuguese Snack Sampler Platter, giving the flavor of Portugal and the memory of a view from the Bela Vista balcony captured by Macau’s acclaimed artist, George Chinnery, a view he had portrayed in his paintings more than a century earlier.

If you have a sweet tooth, then Café Bela Vista Dessert Sampler – Marble cheese cake, blueberry New York cheese cake, vanilla panacotta, raspberry tartlet, rice chocolate tart, chocolate orange cake with your choice of sherbet is going to hit the spot, all before you head off to the resort for an afternoon of relaxation by the pool or body treatments in the spa.

Then is its time for dinner at Kam Lai Heen, we all know the best way to eat good Cantonese food is with good friends, with our table of 10 friends it was so easy to sit back and dine well. We could enjoy nine dishes, some of the Kam Lai Heen favorites from Chef Lao and some new experiences for the regular diners. A few of my favorites were, steamed fillet of sliver cod in mini bamboo basket, wok friend prawns with mango and mixed vegetables and for a really different tasting desert rose and ginseng soup with glutinous ice balls.

Just remember to leave a little room for one of Macau’s most popular Chinese almond biscuits, they are waiting in the guest room as part of VIP turn down, this famous Macanese snack is even recommended on the official Macau tourism website, and with so much bon appetite throughout the day, it’s a good night’s sleep that awaits at the Grand Lapa Macau.
