Google Makes Way for Nexus 6 - Goodbye Nexus 5

The popular Nexus 5 has been officially discontinued by Google. This doesn’t come as a surprise as Google was believed to stop selling the device sometime in the Q1 of 2015. This value-for-money smartphone has been discontinued in favor of the new Nexus 6.

The search giant has told The Verge, “While some inventory of Nexus 5 still exists (with our retail and carrier partners), our focus is on the Nexus 6 at this time.” Though Nexus 5 still shows listed on Google’s Nexus page, the purchase link to the Play Store says it’s no longer available.

With the Nexus 5 gone, the Nexus 6 is your only choice in the premium Nexus lineup. As far as the new Motorola-made Nexus 6 goes it has has a 2.7 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chip set with Adreno 420 GPU, backed by 3 GB of Ram. The phone is fueled by a 3220 mAh battery, which Google claims provides up to 24 hours of battery life. It comes with the latest Android operating system, Lollipop, which is an added reason to upgrade from the Nexus 5.

But there’s one caveat – it features a 5.9-inch display, which makes it larger than an average smartphone. Despite the features, the sheer size of the Nexus 6 will be a deal-breaker for most people, as it makes it difficult to use one handed especially if you have small hands. Those looking for a pure Android experience in a more pocket-friendly smartphone, will be forced to look at other options including the new Moto X and Moto G – bypassing the Google Nexus series.
