Goan Bhakkam Peda / Balushahi / Badusha

By Prasanna Hede @savorybites0411

Famous Diwali sweet recipe, its Balushahi / Badusha/ Goan Bhakkam Peda! Perfect melt in mouth sweet for the festival.

It took me a while to post here but I am finally posting a recipe which is my favorite and perfect for the festival season!

In Goa,we call it Bhakkam Peda, but surprisingly I had no idea that this recipe existed elsewhere in India with different name too.

It's also called Balushahi / Badusha.

Recipe is almost same for both, there nothing different but what differ's is how well you make it.

I had given so many attempts to this recipe and finally I could make it perfect,crispy/flaky and melt in mouth!

It does not taste like dough or thick piece of dough soaked in syrup at all. Perfect crispy/flaky sweet, just yumm!

I had recently tried this from famous sweet shops in Goa,just as a curiosity to see how well they make it and to my surprise almost everyone at home praised my recipe 😊

Best part is that ingredients are just basic, and you won't need to break your piggy bank to make them! I did some extra garnish of Pistachios and silver vark ,also added rose essence but that's optional.
You don't need to add them if you cant find them or have to specially buy them only for this recipe. I chose to add them as to make my picture stand out, I have to do something extra right!

If you know how to make your own sweets/whether festive or everyday snacks too then you will end up having so many dishes/sweets/snacks at home and do not need to rely on store bought stuff.

Well, that is what as a food blogger I insist on! Try at home that is most economical and healthier too.

Sometimes I wonder how much are we charged by stores for buying sweets/bakes!

Here is another famous recipe of mine that I had shared before and very festive,Goan Doodh Peda!

Also, another special sweet is very famous, that is Khaja!

  • You can skip rose essence if you do not wish to add in the recipe.
  • You can try adding Kewra essence too.
  • The lime juice is added to avoid sugar syrup crystallization.
  • Make the dough real soft, that will make the final peda melt in mouth.
  • These are best enjoyed warm.
  • Make sure the cracks in your dough ball are very slight.
  • If you drop the dough ball with lots of cracks then there is a possibility that the peda will crack open when you are frying them.
