Ghost signs (85): Subscription News Room
At the top of Saddler Street, Durham, near the castle, is an early nineteenth-century building. Above its door is a painted sign: Subscription News Room. When newspapers and journals were expensive, joining such an organisation allowed a wide range of reading in return for an annual subscription - and usually a comfortable and pleasant environment in which to read.
