First Impressions: Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso

KimiUso - 2

Out of all the anime I’ve ultimately decided to watch for now, Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso is the only romantic anime. And it’s a good thing too, because I get the feeling KimiUso is going to be more than enough for this season due to how fluffy it looks.

Kousei is what one would call a piano prodigy. Trained to be one of the best by his strict mother, little Kousei lives a pretty sad childhood and until one day during an important competition, suddenly loses his ability to play completely.

Two years have passed since then, and Kousei is still in the same spot, incapable of forgetting the pain and frustration of what he felt that day. More or less resigned to his situation, he lives a monotone middle school life until the day he meets an energetic violinist named Kaori.

Aside from a very predictable plot, KimiUso is one of those anime where you only watch for the interactions between the characters, and the story is seen as just an accessory. It’s not that Kousei’s life isn’t interesting –the flashbacks broke my heart—I simply want to see how exactly Kaori will change his life for the better.

Along with Kaori, I’m also curious to see how Kousei’s closest friends – Tsubaki and Ryota will evolve. Ryota and Kaori apparently like each other, Tsubaki obviously has a one-sided crush on Kousei, while judging by everything that we’ve seen so far, Kousei will fall for Kaori. And just by knowing all of this, you know there’s going to be a lot of drama (my favorite cup of tea).

So I’ve mentioned the romance, the characters, and a bit of the drama, but what about the rest? Well for a sentimental anime, KimiUso’s art answers my expectations: it’s well done and pretty to look at. There were also a few shots which were impressive and tugged at my heart strings such as the empty wheelchair of Kousei’s mother with her shadow still present, reflecting how present her influence is in her son’s life even after her death, or the moment when Kaori played the Melodica with the kids accompanying her with their instruments.

For someone who was a musician herself, I’m happy they didn’t resort to only using famous classical pieces and even added a little pop music. But seeing as how it was only the first episode, and that the Kousei/Kaori duo will surely happen, I know that in the future classical music will be unavoidable to listen to. I just hope they’ll add as much variety as we’ve heard for the moment.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso’s first episode has given me a lot of mixed feelings, from the characters to the music. And it’s been bothering me to the point where I’ve forced myself to get over it, come to a simple conclusion, and say it was decent. It wasn’t more than decent because of its many uneventful moments, or bad due how pleasing it was for the eyes, but just decent. And I hope my opinion regarding it will change soon.
