First Impressions: Durarara!! x2 Shou

Posted on the 11 January 2015 by Kaminomi @OrganizationASG

After so many years of waiting and desperately hunting for translations of the light novels (which are going to be released in English, yeah!) that only made me want that second season more, guess what happened?

Yep you’re right, Durarara!! is back.

First Impressions: Durarara!! x2 Shou

Durarara!! is back and it hasn’t changed even for a little bit. I was a bit afraid to be honest, afraid that it would have changed so much that I wouldn’t find the Durarara!! I fell in love with back then. Thankfully I had no reasons to be afraid. Durarara!! is back and it’s still the same.

If you’re not familiar with Durarara!! let’s just say that a lot of things happen in Ikebukuro, there are monsters and normal students that aren’t completely normal. There are also many different characters, nice or not. And, even better, this season is going to have yakuza, who happen to be my favorite characters from the  light novel and that I was incredibly sad to never see animated.

Either way, as usual in Durarara!! it feels that, in the end, nothing much happened in this first episode, yet, you can bet there has been an incredibly amount of foreshadowing. You don’t know it yet but everything is important. This was one of the things I fell in love with in the first season and I definitely would have been sad if it wasn’t back in this one.

I don’t really know what to say about this anime to be honest, I found this episode to be the perfect balance between the introduction of new characters and the re-introduction of the ones who were already known to the viewer. Some side characters even had more screen time than before.

Can I take a moment to fangirl about the fact Shingen was back from the very first episode of this season? I know no one likes Shingen, Shingen is Shinra’s father, the guy who always wears a gas mask because Tokyo’s air is polluted (is he my mother or something?)

Another thing I feel is worth mentioning because it’s one thing that makes Durarara!! relatable despite the fact not a single one of us will ever live such situations. And that thing is the otaku duo. The otaku duo are two guys who are always talking about anime, manga and light novels. Well, they were back! And what’s even better, they made clear references to recent stuff. No they didn’t torture anyone based on Black Butler this time but they were there and that’s good enough.

Whenever Durarara!! comes in a conversation, I always urge people to watch it, it’s my favorite anime ever and Durarara!! x2 Shou is definitely going to be my favorite sequel ever.
