Following the critical success of his 2012 EP, City, Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Hayden Calnin decided to take some time off to tweak his much anticipated album.  (In the meantime, his songs were featured on Suits, Parenthood and, most recently, the trailer for the Oscars nominee Room.)  And that’s just the half of it…literally.  This spring, “Australia’s Bon Iver” will be releasing not one, but two debut albums (Cut Love Pt 1 & 2).  The first single off Pt 1 (out March 4th), “Cut Love,” premiered on Consequence of Sound last Friday.

Some would call it folk electronica; others wouldn’t really know what to call it.  “It’s a very honest piece that doesn’t necessarily adhere to classic convention in modern songwriting,” says Calnin of “Cut Love.”  Mixed by Tim Carr (Matt Corby), the title track is an eight-minute experimental work of sonics that works.  Layered with atmospheric chimes, captivating “computer” vocals and seemingly never-ending piano chords, “Cut Love” translates Calnin’s internal musings, on falling in and out of love and more, to music.  Fans of M83, Beach House, Dawn Golden and the unordinary, take a listen.
