Whoever said “Father knows best,” maybe hasn’t had kids look you straight in the eye and tell you what you’ll do for the rest of your life. Often times, kids’ brutal honesty and frank delivery can be good. And in this case, it sounds so, so good.
Former London resident Ed Cares used to be a nanny for two kids, six-year-old Katie and eight-year-old Josh. After humming a song he wrote, the two convinced Ed he should start a band. “You’re probably my second favorite artist after Katy Perry,” the eight-year-old said.
After wrangling up the troops, Ed had his band: Emma Topolski (bass), Rich Legate (guitar) and Glyn Daniels (drums). But now, he needed a name … and so he paid homage to the one and only thing that had so matter-of-factly determined his future: the kids. The band Childcare, began in 2014 and soon started to take off and play its first few shows at the Reading and Leeds Festivals and was offered a deal by Lost in the Manor records.
Their sound is described as “enthused with the energy of punk, drenched in the off-kilter pop sensibilities of Missy Elliot, the infectiousness of The Police and a by-numbers approach to songcraft akin to Happiness In Magazines-era Graham Coxon.”
The post-punk influenced British new-wave pop group just released its latest single, “Film Club.” The track shows off Ed’s mystical and rich narrative of his ability to craft a song, using his wit.
Childcare has supported fellow British pop group Bastille on several dates over October and November of last year and are continuing to prove they’re anything but immature adolescents. While this isn’t your mother’s music, Childcare is its own brand of unsupervised fun. Take a listen.
