There’s something about the deep, swirling guitars central in psych rock that enraptures me — throw a foggy mix and a sitar in there, and I’m completely sold. Black Whales newest track “Tiny Prisms” does just that, sitar solo and all. What it has that most psych rock bands are missing, however, is a catchy pop center that makes it more of a dance worthy ditty than anything with a sitar has any right to be. It’s the perfect mix between something dense and complex enough to be worthy of pulling out the good headphones, but poppy enough to merit a good twist contest. Essentially, it’s exactly what I like my psych rock to be. Check out the track above, and be sure to keep an eye out for the band’s awesomely named sophomore record Through the Prism, Gently out 11/11.
