Emmy Predictions: Supporting Actor/Actress In A Mini/Movie

Posted on the 07 June 2017 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

Kicking off my Emmy Award predictions, covering who has a shot, and who does not. Starting with Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie.

SUPPORTING ACTOR:
The Contenders:
Stanley Tucci (Feud)
Alfred Molina (Feud)
Hank Azaria (The Wizard Of Lies)
Martin Freeman (Sherlock)
David Thewlis (Fargo)
Michael Stuhlbarg (Fargo)
Alexander Skarsgard (Big Little Lies)
Adam Scott (Big Little Lies)
Benito Martinez (American Crime)
Michael Kenneth Williams (The Night Of)

Shoulda Been Contenders:
Richard Dreyfuss (Shots Fired)
Martin Sheen (Anne of Green Gables)
Martin Short (Hairspray Live)
Jonathan Majors (When We Rise)
David Hyde Pierce (When We Rise)

I think those are probably the 10 most likely to get the 5 or 6 spots. We’ve got some well-respected actors in the mix, as well as some fresher faces. The big question is, can Martin Freeman keep getting nominated for Sherlock, while everyone else around him is playing a fresh, new role? Even these “limited series” are forcing their actors to change and become something completely different, yet he’s in the mix each year for playing the same role. There are a few shows with two contenders, and the question there is how much vote splitting is happening? Are Tucci and Molina hurting each other? What about Skarsgard and Scott? Thewlis and Stuhlbarg?

Predictions: Tucci, Molina, Azaria, Thewlis, Skarsgard, and Martinez.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
The Contenders:
Judy Davis (Feud)
Laura Dern (Big Little Lies)
Shailene Woodley (Big Little Lies)
Regina King (American Crime)
Michelle Pfeiffer (The Wizard Of Lies)
Diane Keaton (The Young Pope)
Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo)
Kathy Bates (American Horror Story: Roanoke)
Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story: Roanoka)
Ellen Burstyn (Custody)

Shoulda Been Contenders:
Rose Byrne (Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks)
Renee Elise Goldsberry (Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks)
Kelly Bishop (Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life)
Emily Watson (Genius)
Elaine May (Crisis In Six Scenes)

This is a tighter category. There wasn’t enough love for AHS this time around, I believe, to put both Bates and Paulson in this tight race. I think they could both be left out. Burstyn is always a contender, because of how well respected she is. Heck, even Regina King could be left out. Feud, Big Little Lies, and Pfeiffer and Keaton are all new entries that could throw a huge wrench in the limited series actresses who are used to getting nominated.

Predictions: Davis, Dern, Woodley, Pfeiffer, Keaton, and possibly King.
