Eating Out: Nourish, Leeds

By Natalie Tamara @thetofudiaries

As soon as I hear that any veggie-friendly restaurant is opening in Leeds, my heart does a little jump for joy. When I heard about Nourish opening up however, it was a full skip, dance and backflip (metaphorically speaking). Let me tell you why…

The concept of Nourish is a fairly simple one: healthy fast food. The meals are nutritionally balanced, made from fresh ingredients, free from salt, sugar and preservatives, and are served up in just a few minutes. All of Nourish’s ingredients are sourced transparently and are fresh in each day with clearly and consistently labelled information on the menu (the list is slightly longer than you can see below – they do also mark ‘vegan’ and ‘wheat-free’).

Finding quick, healthy, plant-based food on the go can be quite a struggle but Nourish have – wait for it – no less than TWENTY-FIVE vegetarian options with SIXTEEN of these also being vegan. Yes I did count, but seriously as I’ve mentioned before sometimes we are lucky if there is one vegetarian option on a menu, let alone anything vegan at all. Just to add, those numbers don’t include the sides where I’d estimate there’s around another eight vegan/twelve vegetarian snacks. Nourish are also planning to run meatfree Mondays so if anything this veggie-friendly offering is only going to grow!

Nourish’s founder, David Stache, is a qualified nutritionist with a passion for real food. When I popped down to an opening event for their new Leeds venture (Nourish already have a Sheffield branch), it was incredible to hear how much his thoughts on food and the food industry resonate with my own. For David, Nourish will be a not-for-profit venture, with any wage he would have taken, instead being reinvested into community projects. The Leeds venue will also be hosting free nutrition and cooking classes to make healthy eating as accessible to the community as possible.

I can’t wait to see where Nourish goes in the future and am looking forward to heading back to try more of their veggie options. Have you popped down to Nourish yet?
