I love photos that contain layers of action all in one scene – particularly during bride or groom preparation when so much is happening at one time. In this image I love that we get this great ‘kissy inspection face’ from Rachael on the right side whilst in the background refection we see her sister applying makeup. Additionally we get a hint of Rachael’s dress in the reflection as well her sister’s dress peeking out behind Rachael. If you didn’t see the wedding dress the image could almost pass for a few girls getting ready for a night out on the town. Some photographers would focus on ‘beautifying’ this scene – cutting out the makeup and the ‘busy-ness’ of the scene – but to me that makes the scene ‘real’. Rarely do girls get ready in an ivory tower of perfection. We explode everywhere like pigpen from Peanuts – but instead of dust we have a trail of beautifying powders and lip balms in our wake.
