Dr. Who? No, No, No. It’s DOCTOR WHO!

I have seen the name Doctor Who all around social media. I never knew who or what he was or what it was all about. I had a coworker that claimed to be a “Whovian” but I thought he was into Harry Potter or something like that. Once I got teamed up with Michael and Troy at Geekasms, that is when it sunk in. I needed to know what made this fandom so popular.

It all started for me back in mid March of 2014. I was posting something and I tagged it “Dr. Who”.  What a mistake that was.  You think I killed someones dog or something.  I changed it to the correct way by not abbreviating it.  That is the day I decided to take the plunged into the Whoverse.  I hopped on Netflix and fired up season 1 from the “New Who”. I watched it while lying in bed on my tablet. By the end of the episode I had the raised eyebrow expression.  I was asked what I thought of it and my response was something along the lines of ‘time travel and living mannequins’. I was confused to say the least.  At this point I was aware there was many older episodes and 8 previous Doctors but was told this would be a good place to start. The next night I watched the next episode. The next, 2 more. This went on and on and the next thing I know, 6 weeks have gone by and I finished 7 seasons of Doctor Who.

This show sucked me in like the planet Midnight sucked the passengers from the shuttle. I am loving the show. The humor and science fiction rolled into a well produced show did it for me. I wasn’t sure at first if I was going to be able to handle the British accents being this the first overseas show I watched. That was overcome a few episodes in. I almost didn’t even notice it anymore.

I like how everything tied in to one another. It made you think a bit but not make you lose track of what was happening. The regenerating Doctor was a smart move to keep the show alive for 50 years. That giving them the ability to change the lead actor while keeping him the same person. Another thing I like with the show is the little details of history that are touched on so subtly. Giving ol’ Bill Shakespeare the “neck brace” or the staining on one of Van Gogh’s paintings. Very nice touches. While being a science fiction based program, there is a bit of drama mixed in which is something I enjoyed. It kept me entertained. As far as having a favorite Doctor, it would be a toss-up between the tenth and eleventh. I had no problems with number nine but I enjoyed more of the humor from the other two.  To add to my excitement of this show, I have to say that the “villains” in this series are very original and creative.  When I first saw the episode Blink, I said, “Now THAT was an awesome episode!”  Very original.  Very creative. Very entertaining.  Exactly what I like in a show.  I know certain individuals (Troy, I’m talking about you) that get the creeps when they see weeping angel statues.  Then a few seasons later, turning the Statue of Liberty into an “angel”…epic.

I have to say that I am glad I gave the show a chance because it IS all that it is cracked up to be.  I will continue to watch it when it starts up again and hopefully I won’t fall behind.  I got a little spoiled that I was able to power through 7 seasons in 6 weeks but I will have to deal with it.  I would have to say that I don’t know everything there is to know about Doctor Who but I believe I have to right to call myself a Whovian.
