Do It Yourself: How to Build Your Own Putting Green

By Kravelv

Golf is a very popular sport that many seem to enjoy quite a bit. No matter if we’re talking about indulging in a game of golf on a full-sized court or the mini-golf one, the fact is that it offers a really good time. That being said, golf lovers – and especially those with their own backyards – can easily create a place of their own where they can enjoy practicing their swings.

That being said, here are some considerations to keep in mind if you’re looking to make your own putting green right in the comfort of your own backyard.

Do It Yourself: How to Build Your Own Putting Green

Choose the location

Before you start digging up your backyard, it would be wise to first choose the right location. The location you choose for your putting green will make it either a hit or a miss. Depending on your choice of ground covers (more on that later) you’ll want to choose a place with plenty of sunlight if you decide to go with real grass. Moreover, make sure that the piece of land is leveled. If it slopes too much, it won’t just hinder your game but your maintenance as well. Of course, aside from the backyard preparations, make sure you have your trusted mallet putters ready to go once everything is in its place.

Decide on the ground cover

As mentioned earlier, you’ll also need to decide on the type of ground cover. Here, the choice usually boils down to natural vs. the artificial grass. Both of these have their own set of pros and cons, so you’ll need to decide based on your personal preferences. When it comes to natural grass, you need to keep in mind the maintenance that includes watering, trimming and maintaining a certain coverage. On the other hand, artificial grass requires far less upkeep but is considerably more expensive to install. So, make your choice based on your personal preferences, but make sure it aligns with your budget and your free time as well.

Mind the maintenance

Next, you’ll also need to keep in mind the maintenance. Both artificial and natural grass will require some maintenance but real grass is taking the lead here. Simply put, the artificial grass will always be the same length and density as the first time you’ve installed it. It will, of course, experience some wear and tear over time but that’s something you don’t need to worry about on a daily basis. However, the natural grass will require a bit more work. You’ll need to ensure that you plant it properly and give it enough time to grow. You’ll also need to see to it that your grass is nicely irrigated so that it doesn’t dry out. Finally, you’ll need to trim it regularly and maintain it at a certain length.

Take care of drainage

Finally, no matter which ground cover you choose or where you decide to make your putting green, you’ll need to ensure that you install a good drainage system. Since your green will be out in the open and exposed to all the weather elements, you want to ensure that your court can drain off nicely even when the rains are quite heavy. Otherwise, you will end up with a soaked court which you can’t quite enjoy as you otherwise would.

When it comes to building your own putting green the majority of choices will be left to your personal preference. However, there are some basic things you need to consider first before you actually get down to digging. So, make sure you have everything planned out before you begin so that you don’t have to make any decisions on the spot.
