Sounding like the background noise on a Deerhunter album with some very 70s glam, coke-infused sax swells tacked on for good measure, “Landscapes in the Mist” is a ride you don’t know you’re going on until you wake up halfway around the world and on the other side of five minutes. The latest from Canadian no wave act Dirty Beaches (Alex Zhang Hungtai), “Landscapes in the Mist” marks a turn away from the hip-hop influenced pattern mixing and towards something murky and atmospheric. What sounds like marine wildlife humming mixes in with arrhythmic clicks that sound like teeth clattering in a pitch black room if you concentrate on them enough. Thrilling stuff, this is.
