Wilson’s genre-spanning pop is brought to life by his lofty crooning. More than comfortable in his falsetto, Wilson’s voice fits comfortably atop the slow-churning synth ballads and high energy, hip-shaking soul pop jams that comprise his first EP. It all started with the whirring synths and syncopation of the release’s culminating track, “Killed Ya”. “Heartbreaker”, came out next, showcasing Wilson’s R&B side with electronic flair. Another EP highlight is the earnest love song, “If You Went Away”, on which you can see Wilson’s songwriting with and without expansive layers of production. Overall, the EP has a little bit of everything to make music fans of the last three decades happy and a whole lot of artfully arranged heartbreak. It’s an engaging listen that has the ability to make a listener laugh, cry and dance. The Boy Who Cried Thunder EP is out now on Zap Records and can be streamed on SoundCloud.
