Red Rocks Amphitheater, SXSW, Bonnaroo, Sasquatch, Pitchfork, Newport Folk — this is the dream-come-true tour of none other than Australian-based artist Courtney Barnett. Barnett, who has yet to release her highly anticipated debut album, is truly a force to be reckoned with, and her newest single proves exactly why.

The newest single off of Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit, “Depreston” explores what it means to get older, from responsibility to mortality. Backed by a simple electric guitar, Barnett offers a snapshot into a couple’s life choice of moving out of a lively city and buying their first home in the bland suburban town of Preston. The real estate agent mentions that house is a “deceased estate,” and suddenly the narrator notices items and flourishes in the home that make her wonder how the previous owner’s rich life had filled the house. The song fades out with the real estate agent’s seemingly-nonchalant words repeating, “If you’ve got a spare half a million / You could knock it down and start rebuilding…” Barnett’s blasé vocal style captures just how exhausting and piercing life is, and her literal lyrics matter-of-factly agree on this beautifully sad yet true tune. Her new album is out March 23 — pre-order the awesomeness here.
