Amy Messenger and Steve Brown

Here is what Amy had to say:

After an 8 year relationship, we are getting married on July 20th, 2013 in ‘Yurt Camp Devon’.

We got engaged in the 2011 during a summer road-trip across the deep south of America. Steve got down on one knee over a BBQ of corn on the cob, ribs and beer in the mountains of Virginia, it was the perfect setting and was amongst many aspects of that trip that made it one of our most memorable journeys together.

Since then, our love for all things ‘Americana’ has grown and we decided we wanted our guests to experience a taste of the deep south for the wedding so they know why we love it so. We have named our tables after notable areas or sights we visited (including Dollywood and Graceland) and compiled playlists with our favorite blues and jazz artists from the trip. Food will be typical Southern fare, and Jack Daniels whiskey will feature a lot! The venue we are getting married in is very outdoorsy and reminds us of some of the campsites we frequented in America. Our guests will stay in ‘yurts’ and it will be a weekend affair where family and friends can bond and enjoy the relaxed setting. It perfectly reflects our laid back personalities. Perhaps a campfire song or two will be sung! Our number one aim for the day is that people have fun and enjoy themselves.

We have a limited budget so have had to sacrifice many elements of a ‘traditional’ wedding and have been working very hard ourselves to produce decorations and delegate roles to friends and family instead of spending money on professionals. Much of the decorations and stationary will made by us or found after hours scouring vintage shops and car boots sales, we have amassed cheap decorative signs and vintage suitcases (amongst other items) to go with the theme and transform the venue into a slice of America. We have even been known to rummage through bins outside pubs for used glass coke bottles. I have dedicated many (MANY) evenings since the wedding crafting paper flowers for my bouquet and for table decorations and for my bouquet, made from maps used on our road trip and other recycled materials.

At the moment our plans for photography involve relying on friends and a student photographer who wants to build her portfolio to capture the day in order to keep costs down. We know this is a big risk and it is one dilemma that has been troubling us. Having spent so much time investing our personalities in the day it would be great to have the security of a talented, professional photographer who will be able to appropriately understand our vision and tell our story. And, if you pick us, you will get to enjoy an Americana inspired extravaganza: we will tempt you with Jack Daniels cocktails, all the pulled pork you can eat and the opportunity to sleep in a cosy Yurt in Devon J. What more could you want??

Please pick us!

And the Second finalists :

Vicki shenkin and Jamie

Vicki shenkin and Jamie

Who are we
We are Jamie and Vicki, sometimes known as JK & the Jew, the baldie bastart & the princess, Mr Kerr and Miss Shenkin, soon to be Mr & Mrs Kerr of East London via Glasgow, Dumfries and Zimbabwe.

He is the duty manager of a trendy cocktail bar and restaurant in Glasgow’s Merchant City. She a jumped up graduate of Edinburgh University moonlighting as a bartender. July 11th 2004 and the former asserts the latter needs to “sort out” her attitude problem. The perfect beginning to a beautiful relationship. 6 months of on and off dating and 3 years living together in Glasgow before spreading those wings down to London town where we have made our home.

What
A chilly proposal in Whitstable on the 27th January. Champagne in plastic cups on a bench by the sea and it couldn’t have been more perfect.

When
1st Dec 2013.
After more than 8 years together, we’d waited long enough and wanted to get married, not just be engaged.
A Sunday wedding the requirement of the plethora of Jews in the party. The date just before the Christmas chaos that ensues when both parties run restaurants.

Where
Hackney Town hall for ceremony then Shoreditch Studios for reception.

Why
East London is our home. Not Glasgow, not Dumfries and certainly not Zimbabwe. And our friends and family understand this. We wanted venues that were effectively blank canvases for us to bring our own style and personality (and food and drink and staff and tables and chairs).

How
We want this to be a celebration; a day we’ll look back on for years to come. We want it to be about us. Not about showy glitz and glamour and bows on the back of chairs. Too many weddings we’ve been to say more about the hotels they are held in than the people at the center. They are expensive (and often negative) advertising for venues and their products instead of personalised events about the key message: marriage. That’s why we’re doing it ourselves. We’re in a lucky situation due to our jobs. We can do almost everything ourselves, or through friends and colleagues. You can’t ask for a better wedding gift than that. And in all honesty, we couldn’t justify the expense otherwise. Our savings are for providing a future for our family (still in the making I have to add). One day we want to start our own business; open a cafe or restaurant. To sacrifice this, our future, for what is ultimately a party (albeit a great one) is something we cannot swallow.

So, by taking our photos on the day, you’re not only giving us the best present ever – memories. But, you’re effectively investing in our restaurant and in British small businesses. And we can promise you free coffee in return!

Vicki & Jamie
