Comedy Club Bangkok – Review

By Harvie

I went to check out the Comedy Club Bangkok that had recently opened its doors in Sukhumvit 33/1 above the Royal Oak pub. I’m a fan of comedy and who isn’t? As I was trolling through my Facebook looking for holiday pictures of girls in bikinis, I came across an event listed by the Comedy Club Bangkok for an open mic night. It was either go to Nana Soi 4 and look at some ladyboys, or watch some stand up. Stand up it was.

The club is situation above the Royal Oak bar and it’s quite easy to find, simple walk down Soi 33/1 for about 50 meters and you will see the pub on your right. Walk in and on your right hand side you will see some stairs, walk up and you’ve found the comedy club. Tickets were 250 baht if you booked in advance via their website, or 350 baht on the door, this included one free alcoholic drink. Beers were very good value at 80 baht per pop too if you wanted any more.

Comedy Club Bangkok

Was it any good?

I didn’t expect too much going into it, I’m not sure how big of a scene comedy is in Bangkok, so I went in with low expectations. To my surprise it was actually a really good show, considering they were mostly newbies (open mic). You knew that the owner scouted and reviewed the comics before hand  ‘t as everybody who went up got some good laughs and were pretty good. The show latest two hours and started from 8:30pm and finished around 10:45pm, with a 15 minute break half way through.

It’s quite a small room so you can speak and have a chat with the comics after which I thought was cool. Chris Wegoda, the host did a great job of stringing the show together and being a funny host. He gets the croward invlove and helps build up a nice little atmosphere inside the venue. Most of the crowd were westerners and there were very few Thai people here, if you’re thinking about taking your girlfriend she will need an okay grasp of English I think to understand the jokes.Best to go with a group of friends and enjoy the cheap beers and good jokes in my opinion.

Another thing I enjoyed was that there wasn’t any censorship (or at least I didn’t think there was), comics could talk about anything they wanted, and they did. The headline was Tristan Botly, who was really funny and worked the crowd like a true pro. From what I know they are trying to host events every Friday at around 8pm and next week have another gig on.
