The Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Stay-Matte Hydrator is a white lotion which is a perfect base for your make up. It is a mattifying lotion which is oil free, and designed to keep excess oil and shininess at bay for 8 hours. It helps to keep the T-zone feeling fresh throughout the day, and you can notice the difference this hydrator can make as soon as you apply it – even in temperatures of 30 degrees C.
Sounds too good to be true? I thought so too. As someone with a very oily T-zone I’ve been desperate to find a moisturiser/primer/foundation/anything which will curb my oily skin without completely drying out my skin. I noticed that as soon as I applied the lotion it quickly became transparent and dried really quickly, leaving even my oily T-zone feeling dry and like it had been freshly powdered. Instantly my nose was less shiny and my pores appeared less obvious.
Without make up my skin stayed matte for about 2 hours, and with make up it was about 3 hours. As soon as I reapplied it though I was instantly matte again. If it’s a matte foundation with oily controlling properties then this will last even longer, but it’s certainly a far from the 8 hour claim. It’s annoying because it seems to work well and quickly, but not for a very long time so I had to top it up. Too much of the hydrator did cause my skin to dry out a little in certain areas.
So whilst it worked, it didn’t work for particularly long. I’d possibly expect this from a brand you can buy in a chemist, and not from a company which charges £32 for 50ml. Perhaps they give you so much because they know you’ll need to top it up throughout the day? I also would have thought that the lotion would have smelt slightly nicer and fresher. Otherwise, I do like this lotion. It mattifies instantly which is great, but the staying power does need rectifying!
