Brunch at Hatch & Sons

By Thedublindiary @TheDublinDiary
It probably hasn't gone unnoticed that this is the fourth time I've written about brunch in four months! I love brunch and think it’s more of an occasion than a meal. The relaxed atmosphere and hassle-free vibe associated with the meal kicks off the day as I mean to carry on!
The best thing about brunch is that I can lie in and yet still enjoy my favorite breakfast foods! It’s one of those meals where you can eat healthy or not, you can drink alcohol without judgment and linger as long as you like reading papers or just chatting with friends. What’s not to like?
My most recent brunch adventure was in Hatch & Sons on St Stephen’s Green. They are located in the basement of The Little Museum of Dublin (a place well worth visiting, have a read here) We visited on one of the most bitter cold days of the year, I was having reservations about picking this place, what I needed was somewhere cosy and warm, I didn't think a basement restaurant would fit the bill. I was wrong!
Contrary to what I expected the dining room was bright and airy and most importantly warm! We were seated in the back dining room and it really was very snug. They don’t have a brunch menu as such but there are number of interesting options in their regular offerings. M went for the baked eggs with sausage, bacon and tomato while I had the smoked salmon with salad. There are other healthier options like fresh fruit or porridge as well as a number of filled Blaas to choose from.
His baked eggs were served in the pan they were cooked in and topped with the sausage, bacon and tomato. It looked really cute, though you had to be really careful, the pan was scorching! It was accompanied by some really rich brown bread that was nearly a meal in itself!

Hatch & Son's take on a full Irish!

My smoked salmon was of a really good quality, none of your slimy wet salmon here. The portion was really generous. I loved the little side of pickled cucumber it was served with. I was delighted to see that I had some of the yummy brown bread too, when the salmon was piled high on the bread and topped with pickles the color contrast were amazing, really made me think of summer!

One of the best things about Hatch & Son was that they served real leaf tea. I’m not a fan of tea bags and I really don’t think they should be a good restaurant’s only choice. Hatch & Son served me some lovely Assam just the way it should be done!

Hatch & Son has firmly established itself as a favorite among Dubliners, and not only for brunch, social media is buzzing with talk of its evening meals too. As soon as I manage to get around to every brunch establishment in Dublin it’ll will be first on my list for a revisit!
