Plot: Bowen’s Heart offers a deeply vulnerable view of how chronic illness impacts an entire family. This feature-length documentary film follows, (a then eight-year-old Bowen), through his third major open-heart surgery as his parents struggle with the hope that the surgery could make his life better and the knowledge that it could make things much worse.

Thoughts on Bowen’s Heart

Bowen’s Heart follows the family that had young Bowen, learning he had a heart defect. Which forces them into having open heart surgery at a young age, with plans of more in his future. At 8 years old Bowen is preparing for his third major surgery.

The documentary explores his early life, and the challenges the family needed to go through. Knowing something could go wrong, they are prepared for the worst. Meeting the parents and siblings that are dealing with the potential worst, while remaining strong to give him the best life.

The documentary gives an up-close and personal account of what a family goes through during these operations. It shows the procedure following how the family must always keep a strong face during the situation. No matter how painful everything is for the family who is helpless when it comes to helping on the medical side.
