United operates 130 of these 737-800’s.  Among the new technologies employed on this next-generation aircraft are the Split Scimitar Winglets, providing fuel savings of 1.6-2.2% ($200M annual fuel savings for United).  The 737-800 is a stretched version of the 737-700, filling the gap left by the decision to discontinue the McDonnell Douglas MD-80/MD-90 following Boeing’s merger with McDonnell Douglas.
