Surf fitness tips

Bodyboarding and any surf will get you fitter, but what to do when you can’t get in the water? You need to train and think about surf fitness.

I try to do this 3-4 times a week, Not only is it good for your surfing, but you’ll feel better for it and look better!

I do 30-45 minutes Functional training (this Wikipedia article explains what it is!). I had a free half hour personal trainer session when I joined my gym, and I got a great routine that targets the core muscles and improves cardiovascular health.

Then I swim for around another 45 minutes. I try to get in as many lengths as possible in the 45 minutes, mostly just swimming along at a regular pace, but occasionally putting lots of effort into a burst of power , mimicking paddling for a wave.

Outside of the gym, I walk most places instead of drive for short distances. Use stairs instead of lifts where possible and generally try to stay as active as possible.

I also use a balance board to help with the core muscles and balance issues.

That’s it really!

Here are some resources I use:

  • This book is great, full of exercises and training tips, I really can’t recommend it enough.   The complete guide to surf fitness
  • A great DVD to help you get fit!Surf stronger
  • A balance board, Hey we all need more balance right? Plus it helps your core muscles Balance board

By improving your general surf fitness, not only will your bodyboarding be better (or if you’re a Stand up person – your surfing!) but you’ll look better and feel better!
