Belgian Tripel – Old Abbey Ales

By Mike @mikescraftbeer

From Old Abbey Ales in Abbotsford comes their "Belgian Tripel" part of the Brewmaster's Selection series. The beer pours an orange colour with a light tan head. The aroma consists of candied sugar, oranges and spices. The flavour is of candied sugar, orange, citrus, malts, spices, bitterness, earth, alcohol and an overall sweetness present in this style. The alcohol content comes in at 9% with an IBU of 30. While I find the style a bit to sweet for my liking this beer does exactly what a Belgian Tripel should do.

Commercial Description: Delicious and approachable, this Belgian style Tripel features a rich malt character enhanced by notes of citrus and spice. The color is clear to deep gold and displays a creamy white head. The Belgian Ale yeast produces pronounced fruity ester and spice characteristics, including notes of orange and coriander. The alcohol may show itself more readily amid the flavors in this style, while pilsner malt sweetness and balancing hop bitterness round out what is customarily a beer offering complex aromas and flavors.

Food pairing as per brewery: Blue Cheese, Gorgonzola, Triple Créme, Goat and light Feta, Cajun, Game, Pork and Roast, Curries and much more
