Being More the Same Than Different

By Yourfamilysurvivalcoach @shari_brewer

This time a week ago, I excitedly published a post about the joys of being a long life learner and of  fleeing to Sydney, the big BIG smoke, to attend a conference about blogging.

And wow, DPCON was all that, and more.

Nicely played Universe, nicely played … as once again you orchestrated the opportunity to cross paths and/or connect with people I needed to learn from – either through hearing their story, or through the opportunity to be heard telling my own. There’s hell of a lot of energy that can be harnessed in a room full of story-tellers and message-givers and let’s just say that as a collective the voice is loud, even if sometimes the individual whispers are small.

Being more the same than different

Having it all … what does it mean? DPCON13

Well … seven days on, and I’m still learning that a couple of days spent in that castle have taught me much more about life and living than about just blogging. And that the imaginary line that’s sometimes drawn between life and blogging is actually a blurry one, and there are times where one can indeed be the other.

And that IS ok.

Here are some of the things I’ve learnt this week, during and post DPCON13, that I’d like to share

  • kindness speaks a language of it’s very own – it’s a simple concept which has far-reaching and complex outcomes and is something that I would like to practice consciously and more often
  • sharing helps everyone who’s listening and the more that is shared, the more there is to share – so many stories were told and through tears there comes triumph
  • essentially we are all more the same than we are different – we can celebrate uniqueness with a shared understanding and that is a very wonderful feeling
  • the Harlem Shake has surpassed The Bus Stop as my all-time favorite group dance and below is exactly what a shy and retiring group of bloggers get up to once the lights dim and the music pumps

All of those points above (ok, well maybe not the Harlem Shake) apply to parenthood too (and here would be an apt time to say hello to the Daddy Bloggers!!). This whole parenting club thingo is really a collective, a larger than self group composed of individual members who have more similarities than differences. It can be way too easy to point out differences instead of looking for commonalities and shared experiences … which, I then gets me back to my first learning – kindness. Oh life! You are indeed a crazy circle!

DPCON attendee or not, what have you learnt about life this week?

Have a great Tuesday and if you’re a blogger, remember to link up with Jess at IBOT! It’s esstentially awesome – so is Jess, I met her – and you can find it here -  Essentially Jess!
