A classic Staggerwing departing the Pacific Coast Dream Machines event.  First flown in 1932, the key feature of the Staggerwing is the atypical negative wing stagger where the lower wing is farther forward than the upper wing.  The intent of this arrangement was to improve pilot visibility and reduce interference drag between the wings.  Beechcraft wanted to produce a large, powerful, and fast cabin biplane aimed at the business executive transport market.  By the start of World War II, Beechcraft had sold more than 424 Model 17s. Beechcraft delivered the 785th and final Staggerwing in 1949.  Nikon D70s w/80-200mm.
