It’s the middle of November and the Portuguese version of “Indian Summer” — called “Verão de São Martinho” (Summer of St. Martin) — has not just kicked in, it’s been extended to a nine-day straight run of sunshine.
The celebration of magusto is associated with a legend, which said that a Roman soldier named Martin of Tours (later known as Saint Martin) was on his horse passing by an almost naked beggar. As he had nothing to give the beggar, he cut his cloak in half with his sword. It was a rainy day and it is said that at this very moment, it stopped raining, hence the expression “Summer of St. Martin.”

By lunchtime, it had warmed up to the point where we had to eat our café lunch under shade. I know you don’t feel sorry for us one bit. Feel sorry for Ice the Dog, who was subjected to the small torture of being surrounded by three cats and unable to do a thing about it while we ate.
We made it up to him after lunch: Ice’s day was spent mostly off-leash and racing around on dunes, playing with us and other dogs. A happy dog is a happy sight!
As usual, I have a large volume of photos to go through. Paulo took his camera, too, which means it’s an extra-large virtual stack of files — I’ll need to split it up into two posts. I’m only publishing a tiny preview for now — a euphemism for a couple of edited photos (both from Apúlia) and two shaky mobile phone video clips.
