Bangkok Float Center

Since unplugging from the matrix in 2012 when I quit my job and moved to Thailand, I have been reading a lot of literature on meditation, thinking, and how to live a more meaningful and happy life (hipster alert). I heard about the sensory deprivation tank/ float tank from a Joe Rogan podcast and it sounded pretty interesting, and when I found out there was a float center in Bangkok, I emailed the owner and booked me in a visit.

What is a floatation tank?

The tank and layout

The place I visited is called “Bangkok Float Center” and is located near Mega Bang-na. The easiest way to get there without knowing the roads is to catch the BTS to Udom Suk and grab a cab. It shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to get there and it’s located in a placed called “Enterprize Park”.

Donovan, the owner of the Bangkok Float Center has a really cool setup, everything is nice, clean and neat. He also has a kitted out ‘chill out’ room with a huge TV, sofas, and a fridge stocked with water, juices and cookies. You’re allowed to relax here before and after your float for as long as you want.

The tank itself looks bad-ass and is made to fit people as tall as 6’7. He said I was the tallest guy to ever use it at 6’3 and I fit in with plenty of room to spare. Once the lid is closed you have the option of leaving the lights on or off ( I recommended off). You also have a small towel and a mist spray for if any salt gets in your eyes.

My review of the float at Bangkok Float Center

As it was my first float, Donovan talked me through everything, gave me useful tips and advice. Before entering the tank you must shower to remove all perfume, gel, makeup and anything else as to not contaminate the water. Don’t worry girls, there’s a full dresser with chair to allow you to remake up after the float.

After showering, I jump in the tank (naked), lay down and turned off the lights. As soon as I lay down some chilled out music started playing for about 10 minutes which helped me settle in. It was a funny experience floating in water but I got the hang of it after 10 minutes and started concentrating on my breathing as it’s recommended.

Around 30 minutes I finally relax and ‘let go’. I find it extremely difficult to explain this in words but I just let go and fully relaxed. Soon after I started getting these visions (hallucination) of totem pole style faces in a number of colours appearing and flashing beams of light. It was like someone had put a movie on and I was unsure if I was asleep or not, but I was thinking as this was happening so I think I was awake. Remember the tank is pitch black and there is literally 0 light coming in.

A few minutes later the images stopped and I become even more relaxed. Then I started to feel like I was floating in space in a anti-clockwise rotation and that my body was spinning while I was actually in a static position.

Then the music came back on indicating I have 5 minutes left of my 1.30 hour float and I got out feeling as relaxed as I have ever felt in my life. I felt as if all my worries had gone in that moment and I was free. The rest of the day I was feeling calm, relaxed and got a really deep sleep. Even as I write this less than 24 hours after my float, I feel more present and harmonic in my person (I hope I don’t come across as a hippy)

My overall thoughts

The float tank may not be for everyone, but after looking around at prices in the U.K, if you’re ever going to try it for yourself, the Bangkok Float Center seems to be the cheapest options by far. I am for sure going again and a few of my friends have already asked me if they can come too. I would recommend getting at least 1.5 hours in the tank, if I had only received an hour I am not sure if I would of gotten my trippy experiences, but each person is different so do whatever you feel comfortable with.

The tank didn’t feel small nor did I feel scared in there.

For more information on the Bangkok Float Center check out the website below. I would definitely recommend for everyone to try it at least once. Any questions? Leave a comment below and I will answer.
