The second album from Afie Jurvanen, more commonly known as Bahamas, is the recently released Barchords. Channeling old timey rock and R&B influences while using a lo-fi sound to add to that appeal, Barchords is a delicately impactful follow-up to his 2009 debut release, Pink Strat.

Many of the songs found on Barchords are simplistically inspiring. Swayable percussion, melodic guitars and raspy, nonchalant vocals give an overall hazy ambiance to this acoustically sensual album. Pulling from various genres has enabled Bahamas to formulate a distinct sound, and while there’s a feeling of melancholy, there’s enough brightness throughout to keep it from becoming too heavy.

The majority of songs are mellow in tempo, but there are a few upbeat tracks that stand out. “Caught Me Thinking” and “Okay Alright I’m Alive” showcase the classic rock vibes and catchy pop influences that make Barchords so endearing. “Never Again” is one of my favorite tracks due to it’s subtle musical composition combined with soulful harmonies, which are strewn across the album – adding to the retro feel and giving the music more depth. Some of the more down-tempo tracks, like “Overjoyed” and “Time and Time Again” incorporate a welcomed classic folk and country side.

Diverse in inspiration, while retaining an overall cohesiveness that is worthy of recognition, makes Barchords a truly quality album. It’s evident in this release that Jurvanen has had some notable growth between albums, and is beginning to really invest the time and energy that is deserved into his budding musical career.
