The MTV VMA's delivered 9.8 million viewers across 10 Viacom networks which was down vs. 2014 BUT that is actually the WRONG way to analyze the numbers. The show generated 19.1 million streams which was a 155% increase YOY. It was the MTV App's best day EVER! Remember guys…the network, and the shows target is MILLENIALS. Millenials consume media differently, you can't just throw out the traditional numbers and go all Debbie Downer on them. In addition to record breaking streams, the show generated a record breaking 21.4 million Tweets making the 2015 MTV VMA's the most tweeted Non Super Bowl TV event since Twitter measurement began. Over on Facebook, 16 million people had 39 million interactions. So before everyone gets down on the show, look at the numbers. ALL THE NUMBERS.

Fear the Walking Dead's 90 minute premiere delivered 10.1 million viewers. 6.3 million of them were RA18-49

Tivo revealed that the CW was the most time-shifted network on television among their subscribers . 77% of the CW's primetime programming was time-shifted. FOX was next on with 71%, then CBS with 61%, ABC with 59% and NBC with 55%. Over on cable, Bravo won the title with 66%, followed by the FYI network with 60%, Lifetime and AMC with 58% and BBC America with 57%. Kids programming and Sports programming were the least shifted networks in the Tivo report. No surprise there.

-According to the lovely Nielsen folks, kids 2-11 and 12-17 are watching more time-shifted television but the kids live TV consumption has remained steady. They're just watching more of both.

-For the record, I have ALWAYS SAID THIS, but now, Nielsen is supporting my theory: According to their Total Audience Report, comparing online video views with the audience viewing a traditional TV program is like comparing apples and oranges. The TV number is expressed as viewers in the average minute of a program. Online video views count gross viewers. This includes a viewer that only consumed a few seconds of the content. If TV viewing was counted the same way, the traditional ratings would be wayyyy higher. The new report paints a pretty good picture for traditional TV. 87% of adults and 76% of 18-34 year olds watch TV every week. Adults consume TV 5.6 days a week while 18-34 year olds watch 4.7 days per week. Adults spend 36 hours a week watching TV. 18-34 year olds spend 22 hours with TV (and 10 with their smartphones.) The Live TV number is the most troubling…4 hours and 55 minutes of live TV per day which is down from 5 hours and 10 minutes last year. Smartphone usage has increased from 1 hour and 12 minutes to 1 hour and 27 minutes.

-Netflix subscribers spend 90 minutes per day streaming. The average American spends more time watching TV and movies on Netflix than they do eating, reading or having sex.

-On Monday, August 24th a billion people used Facebook in one day. That's 1 in 7 people on earth.

THE SHOWS
I discovered a bunch of new shows while I was on break. I didn't realize it until I was typing this, but the majority of them were about drug dealing mobsters. Pure coincidence. Why do I love drug dealing violent mobsters so much? Tony Montana, Tony Soprano, Henry Hill, Michael Corleone, Walter White and now James St. Patrick and Pablo Escobar. None of them are "good" guys and yet, I always find myself rooting for them.  They live SUCH a different life than we all do. Their moral compass is so interesting and complex. I admit, I find their twisted sensibilities, their obsession with loyalty and greed intriguing and of course there's alllllll that MONEY!  If you're into drug dealers and mobsters, then you're going to be psyched to get in to Power, Narcos and Public Morals.

Poweris awesome. SO much fun to watch. It's great to binge this one because EVERY episode is super juicy. The story centers around a drug dealer named James St. Patrick who looks EXACTLY like Dr. Peter Benton from ER sans the scrubs. James has a bunch of nicknames. James, Jamie, G & Ghost. His business partner, Tommy,  looks exactly like Eminem and is a complete whack job. His wife reminds me a lot of Cookie from Empire but has a WAY better wardrobe if you can believe that.  The show is amazing. Lots of drama, violence, twists, turns, sex, nudity and record breaking use of the word M*therf*cker. I don't want to tell you too much. There are only 18 episodes to catch up on so take your time and catch up on them before the start of Season 3 next Spring. I reallllllly love this one and NEED to discuss it with anyone who's watched, so GET STARTED!

Next drug dealing mobster, Pablo Escobar in the new Netflix show Narcos. The first 10 episodes flew by and left my entire family wanting more. Luckily, during our binge watching obsession with the Medellin drug cartel Netflix renewed Narcos for a 2nd season. This show is riveting. Of course I wish Pablo was a better looking, better dressed kingpin like James St. Patrick but I got over his looks pretty quickly. Of course I'd heard of  Escobar, and sort of knew his story, but I had no idea how bad a guy he really was or how corrupt and dangerous Colombia was back in the day. I also didn't realize how much of the cocaine in this country Escobar and his cartel controlled. There's a lot of real footage and photographs woven into the story which was pretty cool. The lead DEA agent, Steve Murphy, played by Boyd Holbrook (you might remember him from Gone Girl) narrates the story and he sounds exactly like Matt Dillon which drove me a little crazy at times, but the show is SO good that I got past it. You guys really need to get into this one asap.

Public Morals on TNT was the 3rd mobster themed show I watched. I've only seen the first 4 episodes so far. I wasn't going to watch it, but I love Ed Burns and had the time so I figured why not check it out. I had seen Ed Burns on one of the Jimmy's and he explained that the show is based on a lot of the stories his Dad, and Irish cop, used to tell him. It's definitely not as good as Narcos or Power but I stuck with it and I'll probably finish. I'll admit, when Ed isn't on the screen, I get a little bored. I'm starting to gauge how much I like a show by whether or not I play Candy Crush while I watch. If I can play while watching, it's not that good. If I play during a commercial it's decent. If I don't even think about grabbing my phone or laptop to play... we have a winner. I didn't touch my phone during Power or Narcos, but I did play a few rounds of CC during Public Morals. If you're into cop shows and Ed Burns check it out you might like it.

Blunt Talk has NOTHING to do with drug dealing mobsters. Well, maybe the cocaine that Patrick Stewart snorts on the show came from Colombia but that's a bit of a stretch. Patrick Stewart is AWESOME in this hilarious new comedy on Starz. Starz is killing it lately aren't they? Chris Albrecht and Ken Segna are HOT. The White Queen, Outlander, Survivors Remorse, Power &  Blunt Talk. One new hit after the other. If they're reading this, congrats guys, you ROCK! Okay, so…Blunt Talk. I automatically think of Captain Picard when I think of Patrick Stewart. I would  NEVER describe him as comedic actor, ever, but he is hilarious in Blunt Talk. Stewart plays Walter Blunt a British dude who has a talk show in Los Angeles. He has a very odd relationship with his manservant and his entire staff, but he's an odd dude himself. In the first episode, the paparazzi catches him with a transgender woman and he goes mental all on camera. The show just follows Walter and his staff and all their insanity and it's pretty enjoyable really. I was a bit nervous when Walter took his clothes off, but Patrick Stewart has a pretty good body for an older guy. It's definitely worth watching this one.

Last but certainly not least is something completely different. I wouldn't say it's must see TV, but if you're a foodie and into restaurants the series Chefs Table on Netflix is pretty cool. I've only watched 2 of the 6 episodes and I'll admit the first one was WAY better than the 2nd but they were both very well done and very interesting. Chef's Table is a docu-series about chefs all over the world and the restaurants they run. The first one I watched was about Massimo Bottura who runs the 3rd best restaurant in the world in Modena Italy. The second episode was about Dan Barber who runs Blue Hill and Blue Hill at Stone Barns here in NY. Dan's a bit of an odd guy and I didn't love my experience at Blue Hill at Stone Barns so I wasn't exactly a fan. I'd still recommend checking this series out when you're looking for a change of pace.

WHILE I WAS OUT...
-Google unveiled a new logo (thoughts?)

-Verizon unveiled a new logo (thoughts?)

-Season 19 of The View premiere's today at 11AM. While I was lying on the beach, Joy Behar was offered what I'm betting was a boatload of dough to come back and save the show, so I think another recap is once again needed: We have Whoopi, Joy, DJ Tanner (aka Candace Cameron Bure) Paula Faris from ABC News who is NOT related to Anna Faris, Raven Symone who used to be on The Cosby Show and then That's SO Raven but more recently played Olivia Lyon on Empire andddddd Michelle Collins a comedienne I've never heard of. That's the group that will sit around what I'm guessing is a much larger table each day. I just may DVR it to see how all of them try to get a word in about Donald Trump, or Bill Cosby or whatever the hot topics of the day are. I'm betting, not an easy task. In addition to alllll of them, Sherri Shepherd, Padma Lakshmi, Stacy London & Molly Sims will all be "contributors" to the show too. All I know is…that is a LOT of estrogen in one place. Let's see how long this version lasts. I'm thinking it's like pre-season football. Who gets cut before sweeps? Any bets?

-The new Bachelor will be the dude that came in 3rd last season, Ben Higgins. I know I said that after watching UnReal on Lifetime that maybe now I'd watch The Bachelor, but honestly, it's not gonna happen. I have a high school Freshman and 6lbs to lose. Strategic viewing decisions must be made.

-Allison Sweeney left The Biggest Loser

-Dancing with the Stars revealed the new cast. Pretty interesting bunch, I must say. My favorite Backstreet Boy, Nick Carter will actually get me to DVR the show and fast forward just to his dances. BSB are my favorite boy band of all time. Need to show Nick the love and support. Joining my boy Nick: Bindi Irwin, Tamar Braxton, Gary Busey (I may have to stop and watch him too, he was a TRAINWRECK on Celeb Apprentice, remember?) Paula Deen, Victor Espinoza (jockey,) Andy Grammar (singer,) Hayes Grier (Vine/Social Media star,) Chaka Khan...Chaka Khan,  Alexa Penavega (actress,) and her hubby, Carlos Penavega (actor,) Alek Skarlatos (hero) and Kim Zolciak (Real Housewife).

-I was looking forward to seeing Craig T. Nelson reprise his role as COACH but for some reason, the show's gone before it ever got started. Craig gets paid for all 13 eps that had been green lit, so he and his agent are psyched. Easiest money the guy ever made in his life.

-Don't forget, tonight, Stephen Colbert's new Late Night show begins. Set your DVR's!
