Autumn In New York

By Gail Aguiar @ImageLegacy

Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, NY

I shot this photo eight years ago to the day — October 13, 2007 — but never got around to posting it here. Such is the story of my life on this blog, the project that only ends when I do. I wouldn’t expect anyone to know how much time I spend revising old posts with broken links (which, after 13 years, is a big virtual pile), fixing and tweaking things to update them for the latest template. My archives stored in Flickr are currently just shy of 40,000 photos/videos, and bear in mind I only upload a fraction of what I shoot. That translates to an obscene number of files on external drives. In fact, I have more external drives than I can connect to my computer at any one time, which means I have to play this game of musical chairs with the USB/FireWire ports when I search for old files.

But let’s return briefly to that weekend eight years ago. This is what I did post about October 13, which was a thrilling one:

October 15, 2007: My Last Biplane Ride of the Season

Whenever autumn comes around, I always think of upstate New York. I have a long history of autumn trips there, and perhaps most sentimentally, it’s where David‘s and Hugh‘s ashes are scattered. I was going to publish a big post on October 1 which would have been my 10th anniversary, but when the day arrived I was feeling very conflicted about what I would say and thought the feeling might pass. But it didn’t, so I decided to let the day unfold and see if a publishing mood would strike. In the end, the day passed without me writing anything or even posting pictures. The advantage of having a blog is that I can write that post at any time, which is a relief when writer’s block strikes.

That period of my life remains a difficult one to speak about at times, but on the other hand I do feel it’s important to speak of it. Every day there is someone experiencing profound loss and it’s a pain that takes a long time to subside. It’s the kind of pain that keeps people awake all night and turning to the internet in search of some solace and meaning. 10 years on from tragedy, it is still part of my personal story and writing about my life then and now plots the journey I’ve taken. If it can help someone through the desert of grief and provide some hope, it is worth gathering the words and pictures and putting them online.
