Are Running Trainers the New Ballet Flats?

By Cleverbuttons @cleverbuttons

Hi All,

You know the song “Baby its Cold Outside” well there couldn’t be a more fitting tune for this weather as it is absolutely freezing out there today. The cold and winter days has got me thinking more and more about the shift in footwear I am seeing throughout the high street. Gone are the ballet flats and obviously sandals unless you want to get frost bitten toes. Instead we are opting for trainers as an alternative to feminine shoes. Don’t get me wrong, I am not suggesting that trainers are not feminine, the can be, but it’s how were wearing them now that is interesting.

So here are some simple ways to wear your running shoes as an alternative to your everyday shoes – let’s face it, if you’re like me then this is the perfect way to get the wear out of them.

With a Tailored Suit

Yes you did read that right. Gone are the days when we just wore our trainers for a long walk to work, promptly changing them once we got to the office. Now we are wearing them as part of the overall outfit which is exciting in itself! I am guessing you are automatically thinking trouser suit as well; not this winter as you should be grabbing your trainers to wear with a pencil skirt. Imagine a black tailored pencil skirt with this pair of Adidas beauties from Millits – perfect right!

Now to pull this off you may need to opt for bare legs and in this weather that is a daunting prospect. So, if like many of us you want to stay warm then have a look for a maxi tube skirt or add thick tights but make sure they work with the shoes and not against them. This is a great way to stay comfy whilst in work and equally look effortlessly stylish during the day.

With Slim Leg Trousers and an Oversized Knit

Who doesn’t love a baggy jumper during the colder months, even better if it is a comedy Christmas jumper at the moment. I never opt for an oversized jumper with leggings as I just don’t feel comfortable, but you can if you don’t have this issue. For me I generally turn to slim legged trousers, especially a patterned pair. For this style I would have always opted for a pair of simple loafers; well that was until I spotted someone sporting a pair of running shoes with hound tooth trousers = AMAZING!

I would opt for a plainer pair of trainers for this look rather than the current neon trend we are seeing. Something with just the Adidas 3 stripes, or the Nike tick would do perfectly. This way you are not distracting from the other elements, but you are keeping the look relaxed and fun.

The Vintage Vixen

Remember when Lilly Allen started wearing trainers with dresses and the world went mad for the look? Well it is still around and growing in popularity again. This is one trend that I definitely loved back in the early 2000’s as it was simple and easy. I have an array of vintage dresses that can only be described as vixen chic and I love to wear them with heels, but why not head back to my 18 year old self and go for a pair of vintage trainers – let’s face it they are far more comfortable.

For this I would always go for a vintage or at least distressed pair of trainers, if they are too new they will only work against the overall look and stand out like a sore thumb!

So for 2014 let’s rejoice in our trainers and you never know they may just motivate us to get running at the same time.
