Anna Karenina

Anna Karenina
To be honest, I don't think I have ever seen a movie in a theater on its first night of release.  Although I may love the cinema, I am absolutely not the kind of person to wait in line to see a film.  The movie will look the same in a week, right? But on November 16th, come hell or high water, I'll be at the cinema to see the most beautiful film of the year, Anna Karenina.  Joe Wright's newest adaptation of the classic Tolstoy novel looks so stunning, it makes me giggle with excitement every time I watch the trailer (which is often since seeing it for the first time six months ago). Besides of course the fabulous acting and genius play on a traditional movie setting, what intrigues me most about Anna Karenina is the divine costumes and jewels, worn primarily by the film's leading lady Keira Knightley.  The film's costume designer, Jacqueline Durran, just spoke with Women's Wear Daily (WWD) about her creations and her words just reaffirm to me that this film is going to be epic. Wanting the pieces to feel slightly more modern than the 1870s-era the film takes place in, Jacqueline sought inspiration from 1950s designers Christian Dior and Cristóbal Balenciaga.  The final pieces all have a sort of Dior New Look meets 1800s design to them, vintage and modern all at once. And the jewels?  All supplied by Chanel, of course.  Quite fitting as Keira is a well known ambassador for the brand, renowned for its statement jewelry made of the finest gems.  The WWD piece even has the fabulous anecdote that Keira would start her day by choosing from the array of Chanel pieces set before her, from the diamonds to the pearls, just as Anna would have. From head to toe (or start to finish as the case may be), Anna Karenina looks absolutely exquisite and November 16th can't come soon enough!  So, who will be joining me for the big night?

P.S.  Banana Republic has also released a Anna Karenina-inspired line for the high street!  That'll be Friday's article :)
