It seems that Android’s tradition of candy-inspired names will continue with its next version, Android 5.0, which will be called Lollipop. The name Lion (another one of Nestle’s products) was considered for Android 5.0, as well. Android names are always fun, sure, but they are not what’s important here. Everyone’s patiently waiting to see what Google’s prepared for us this time – in addition to a change in design, we can also expect the Project Hera, a brand new Kill Switch and many more features that will make the 5.0 version more powerful and unique.

Project Hera. Google is essentially planning to unify Android, Chrome and Search on Android-powered devices and create a better user experience. Hera will replace Android’s current multitasking view and thanks to it, your device will be able to perform tasks that would normally belong to an app, but without actually opening the said app. This basically means that you’ll be able to use your apps through Hera. For example, if you’re using Hangouts, Google will be able to alert you of a new message, display it on your screen, let you send a reply, but you’ll never have to actually open the app. How does that sound?
We can also expect a change in the Home button, which should be replaced by a Google Search key – this way, you’ll get to access search and apps a lot faster. Another new addition will be the Kill Switch, which is supposed to make your phone more secure. Not only will you be able to lock and delete your data from a distance if your phone gets lost or stolen, but you also won’t be able to use your smartphone again until you unlock it with the appropriate Google account.
Android 5.0 is expected to be revealed during Google’s I/O conference, which starts tomorrow (June 25) in San Francisco. Everyone’s also hoping to see a new Nexus device during the conference.
