Amrut Peated Indian Single Malt Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

Amrut Peated Indian Single Malt is made from Indian barley that’s peated in Scotland at Baird in Inverness. Peated to 20-25 PPM, it’s the component that gives Amrut Fusion its light smoky notes and, to my mind, brings the whisky together.

Amrut Peated Indian Single Malt Review

Fusion is the whisky that kicked off my love of Indian single malts. The perfectly balanced presentation of fruity malty sweet and lightly peated savory notes have made it a staple in my house since 2013. Though we’re not here to talk about Fusion, I have a whole post on that, we’re here to dig into this peaty dram. So let’s get to it.

“You can tell the quality of the distillate and the barrels it has been matured in by the crystalline depth to the finish. Everything is clear on the palate and the butterscotch vanillas wrap the phenols for a comfortable and clean finale.” – Amrut

Tasting Notes

EYE
Light toffee

NOSE
Sooty peat, apricot, malty sweet, vanilla, minerality and some light herbal pops. It’s so light coming out of the glass it’s hard to pick up much after the sooty peat and the apricots, but when you get those noteful whiffs, it’s nice.

PALATE
Sooty peat, apricot, malty sweet, vanilla, minerality and some light herbal pops and a yuzu-like sweetness. Palate sits like a near carbon copy of the aroma with a bit more sweetness but it’s so light and dominated by that sooty peat it’s hard to really get much out of it.

FINISH
Med-Long -> Sooty peat and lightly fruity sweet with a soft graham kicker, but again there’s just not much happening.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Not balanced, med-thin body, light soft feel.

Amrut Peated Indian Single Malt – Overall Thoughts and Score

Dominated by the sooty peat with little else going on, this is a soft light dram that floats through the senses like a dirty ghost. I don’t know what more to make of it, there just isn’t a whole lot going on with this Amrut Peated Indian Single Malt.

SCORE: 2/5

Summary

Soft, light and ghostly, this leaves a trail of soot through the senses that just isn’t appealing.
