Going Gaga
Last night my attention was drawn to this by a Youth Worker living in Germany, Rachel Blom. In her post,(well worth a read) Rachel asks whether the apparent ‘genuineness’ of her faith is confusing to young people as they see others who would cringe at Gaga’s antics praying with less fervour. Once you get through the various states of undress to the actual prayer at 1 minute 45, it certainly has a heartfelt ring about it.
The thing is, though, surely it is not our place to judge a person’s faith on the way they pray? Times without number I have urged people to be as genuine, honest and hesitant as they like when they take their first halting steps into praying. For them to film their efforts would be foolish, and for me to critique their words would be inappropriate.
I have to confess that if I stumble upon a video of Lady Gaga performance I tend to turn away. The salacious exhibitionism does little for me, and the music does not appeal. Sadly, though, I have found far more to offend me in the ‘religious’ comments posted on this video on YouTube than any performance of Gaga’s. Why does the defence of love end up sounding like hate, I wonder?
I reckon there is a song lyric in there, if any quirky musical genius is reading this…
