6 Great Things You Didn’t Know You Can Do on Twitter and Facebook

Think you know your way around Twitter and Facebook? Though these social networks are some of the most popular websites on the Internet, they're also filled with untapped potential, and have a lot more to offer than you may think.

From the Facebook section manager to embedded tweets and SlideShares, these 6 great features will improve your daily social media experience:

Facebook

1. Save links for later. Facebook recently added a feature that lets you bookmark links to videos, events, articles, and more to read later. Simply click that little downward arrow located on the top right-hand corner of the post and choose the 'Save' option.

To view the posts you've saved for later, go to the homepage and click Saved in the left-hand column.

2. Manage sections. Did you know that the sections on your Business page aren't fixed and that you can reorder them? Want your 'Posts' section to be above 'Photos'? No problem - just hover your mouse over any of your sections until a pencil appears, then click the pencil and choose 'Manage sections'. Drag to reorder.

3. Embed tweet. In case it's slipped past your social media radar, Twitter lets users easily embed tweets. This is a terrific feature, specially for those businesses whose communities are outside of social media.

How to embed a tweet: sign into Twitter and select a tweet to embed. Then, click the ellipsis at the bottom of the tweet and choose 'Embed Tweet'. Copy the HTML code and paste it into your blog editor. Ta-da! Your tweet has been embedded.

Now that you know how to embed tweets, let's go over some best practices to using this feature:

  • showcase user testimonials on your case study pages or landing page;
  • embed tweets to support the topic you're discussing in the blog post;
  • create summary posts; embedded tweets make it easy to perceive a large amount of information;
  • socialize your email newsletter by embedding relevant tweets.

4. Embed slideshares. When you embed a SlideShare directly into your tweet, your followers can view it without having to leave Twitter. To embed a SlideShare, simply link your tweet to the presentation and it will embed automatically.

5. Twitter activity dashboard. Have you ever checked your Twitter activity dashboard? This tool helps you learn more about your tweets and how they resonate with your audience, specifically:

  • compare your activity and see how it trends over time;
  • see how people engage with your stream in real time;
  • download your Twitter metrics and more.

To get started, log into analytics.twitter.com using your Twitter username and password.

6. Tag people in Twitter photos. Just like on Facebook, you can tag people on your photos, and it doesn't count against your 140 characters.
