2000 Trees 2014: Band of Skulls

Band of Skulls

There’s not many things I like about Glastonbury but I do tend to take the opportunity to touch base with bands i’m going to be seeing later in the summer through what is both excellent live coverage and a damning testament to what live music has become to the masses.

I’d never really heard of Band of Skulls before they were announced to headline the Thursday night. The only thing I had on my Itunes was from the Twilight soundtrack, there were a lot of good bands that put out new material for a big payday so I checked it out so what?

Turns out they’ve got some sweet tracks, nice dirty and warped guitars straight from south america, though I should mention at this point they’re actually from Southampton though you wouldn’t know it to look at them. They’ve been in the game 10 years but only really had any output to speak of in the last half of a decade.

Their debut actually contains a couple of their best songs, back and forth duet “I Know What I Am“, Lead singer and guitarist Russell Marsden is at his grungiest in “Death by Diamonds and Pearls” both of which are heavy hitters in their setlists. “Bruises” from second album Sweet and Sour sees Emma Richardson take the vocal reins and the ultimately cool male/female underscoring “Devil Takes Care of His Own“.

They’ve recently released their third album, Himilayan which has seen some sort of commercial success. They played “Hoochie Coochie” on the Saturday at Glastonbury on The Other Stage and it went down a storm.
