Julius Avery’s The Pope’s Exorcist is coming to the cinemas following on from his previous excellent movie Overlord. Before we go and watch the latest movie on exorcism, it might be good to check out a few from the past. It has become a sub-genre of horror that has had the right mixture of quality over the years.

1 – The Exorcist (1973)
William Friedkin’s The Exorcist is the Godfather of the subgenre. When this movie came out, it changed how horror movies were viewed being the select group of horror movies to be recognized by the Academy at the Oscars. It is one of the truly masterpiece-level horrors and there really isn’t too much more to say about the quality of this movie.
2 – The Cleansing Hour (2020)
Damien LeVeck’s The Cleansing Hour looks to change how exorcisms were seen. The movie uses the streaming popularization of consuming media to give us a new story. It follows a team that conducts exorcisms on stream for profit, faking it all along the way. However, their latest performances see them connect with true evil, giving them a fight for their own lives with their biggest-ever viewing numbers.
In what is a chaotic movie, it shows how far people will go to make money. It shows how using people’s beliefs can come back to haunt them. The Cleansing Hour doesn’t hold back and is one of the best streaming platform-based movies.
3 – Deliver Us from Evil (2014)
Scott Derrickson’s Deliver Us from Evil follows a New York police officer investigating a series of religious crimes. It sees him team up with an unconventional priest Mendoza who can help him with exorcisms if required.
Deliver Us from Evil is based on a series of real cases investigated. Where this movie stands up by using the fact the police officer isn’t big on religion and doesn’t believe in evil. The movie is filled with suspenseful moments and disturbing horror moments that balance with real life. It all leads to one of the best exorcism sequences in modern cinema too.
4 – The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)
Adam Robitel’s The Taking of Deborah Logan follows an elderly woman battling Alzheimer’s. It follows a film crew showing the changes she is going through, only for this to lead to a much more sinister series of events.
This has one of the best twists on how everything unfolds. While many other movies focus purely on exorcism. The Taking of Deborah Logan has a much bigger shock value, with one of the most disturbing scenes of any of the movies on the list.
5 – The Conjuring Franchise
James Wan’s The Conjuring Movies introduced us to the real-life stories of Ed and Lorraine Warren. The famous couple helped people with some of the most difficult supernatural events. In both movies, the couple must figure out what is behind the hauntings the families are facing.
The movies might not solely focus on the exorcisms, but they both have a chance to see how a calmer exorcism unfolds. While The Conjuring The Devil Made Me Do It, might not be the most popular in the franchise. The opening sequence does have one of the best exorcism sequences with very real consequences to what happens.
6 – Of the Devil (2022)
Kelton Jones’ Of the Devil follows a family desperate to find a cure for their child’s brain cancer. It leads them to an unconventional treatment that leads to the child becoming possessed by an ancient evil.
This is a movie that uses the impossible position parents could find themselves in. It shows how far they would go for a solution which could save their child. However, the unforeseen consequences catch up with them in horrific nature.
7 – The Last Exorcism (2010)
Daniel Stamm’s The Last Exorcism follows a troubled minister who agrees to one last exorcism to be filmed for a documentary. It starts being a by-the-books exorcism but takes a dramatic turn that leads to the horrors in the movie.
8 – The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
Scott Derrickson’s The Exorcism of Emily Rose gets to dive into the legal side of exorcisms. It follows an incident that leads to the death of a young woman while an exorcism is taking place.
This is one of the most interesting looks at how exorcisms are handled in life. It shows us how the church does create a safe environment that embraces science while dealing with the exorcism side of things. This is one of the films that pushed the exorcism movies back into mainstream horrors in a smart way too.
9 – The Sin Eater (The Order) (2003)
Brian Helgeland’s The Sin Eater follows a young priest that helps deal with evil possession. He has a unique approach which plays more into the drama around it all. However, the horror moments are still strong, but not gore-based like many others.
This movie gets to draw the curtain back more on how the Vatican operated. It shows how some people will help solve the problem, while others are happy to deny it even exists.
10 – The Wailing (2016)
Na Hong-jin’s The Wailing follows a village that finds itself being wiped out by a mysterious illness. We follow a policeman trying to solve the mystery and save his own daughter, leading them down a strange supernatural path.
While The Wailing doesn’t focus on a pure exorcism premise, it is one of the greatest modern horror movies. It is one of the many excellent horrors coming out from South Korea in recent years.
