Your Twitter Feed Now Shows Tweets from Strangers, Here’s Why It’s a Good Thing

“Additionally, when we identify a Tweet, an account to follow, or other content that’s popular or relevant, we may add it to your timeline. This means you will sometimes see Tweets from accounts you don’t follow. We select each Tweet using a variety of signals, including how popular it is and how people in your network are interacting with it. Our goal is to make your home timeline even more relevant and interesting.”

Keep in mind that this feature goes both ways. Just as you see tweets from strangers on your timeline, your own tweets will also appear on other accounts as well. When your followers favorite one of your tweets, that tweet will appear on many other accounts, bringing you more followers, more retweets to make you famous than ever.

Yes, this will make your Twitter feed a little messy and yes, it will also be annoying, but if you find a particular person using that “Favorite” button too much, you can always silence them using Twitter’s Mute option.

Facebook has been using this feature to make content more discoverable for a few months. Twitter is only joining the club. The micro-blogging network will use this feature to boost its advertising to show ads to specific audiences, just as Facebook does.
