It’s time for the first of two summer-themed Writing Challenges!
Each month, The Poisoned Martini presents a photo to spark your creativity. Such images, because of their visual nature, vividly speak to writers and spark ideas for writing. View the image below and write a scene, a short story, a chapter, a novella, or maybe even a novel. Consider what the image means to you, what it reminds you of, or explore what it could be. Ponder what you see and then put pen to paper or finger to keyboard.
July’s challenge featured an image taken in one of the world’s most famous prisons. From 1933 to 1963, Alcatraz Island served as a federal penitentiary, housing some of the most infamous criminals in U. S. history, including Al Capone and “Machine Gun” Kelly. Before its use as a prison, the island served as a military garrison and was used as a military prison during the Civil War. Becoming a National Park in 1972, Alcatraz is now one of the most visited sites in San Francisco. The image, taken in June 2015, is of cell #109 in Cell Block C (in the part nicknamed C-D Street), and can be viewed here.
