At this time of year, the combination of dark days, cold weather and the inevitability that there’ll be at least one illness going around your friends/family/colleagues (delete as appropriate), tests your immune system that little bit more. It’s the perfect time then to consider giving your body a helping hand with warming healthy soups, nourishing stews, and high energy treats.
It’s also this time of year when I don’t mind adding in a couple of vegan-friendly supplements or fortified foods to make sure my body is getting everything it needs. Since I’m taking part in Veganuary (and hoping to continue after), making sure I’m filling in the gaps that can be harder on a solely plant-based diet has been on my mind too.
As you may know, Vitamin B12 is the big one that vegans needs to be especially conscious of – the Vegan Society have a very informative write-up here. Vitamin B12 is mainly found in foods derived from animal sources such as eggs, meat and fish; though it can be found in natural plant-based forms such as seaweed and yeast extract (like Marmite), there is a danger of deficiency in a vegan diet.
