Win a Crane Animal-Shaped Cool Mist Humidifier

By Bloggerfather @bloggerfather
The seasons are changing, which means it's time again for my boy to have a crazy cough, which means it's time again to call the doctor to say our kid has a crazy cough, which means it's time again for the doctor to calm us down and recommend a cool mist humidifier.
Win a Crane Animal-Shaped Cool Mist HumidifierA few months ago, I visited the New York Baby Show, and spent quality time with Lance, Matt, Jason, and Kevin from the NYC Dads Group (and shared quality pizza with them). Then I wandered around the conference area and stopped as soon as I saw these humidifiers from Crane. A short conversation later, and I now have a humidifier to review and one to give away.
Here's the one I got to review, standing proudly in my daughter's room:

It's a really cute humidifier, and depending on your kid's personality, there are plenty of designs to choose from. There's the pink pig and the brown owl, a train, a yellow duck (of course), and for the really cool kids, a Hello Kitty one.
And now my son is happy, because his humidifier doesn't have to leave his room anymore, my daughter is happy, because she has a cool owl for her owl-filled room (and this one has freakin' cool steam coming out of its freakin' ears), and we're happy, because it's always better to save a medical problem with cool mist than with medicine. In fact, the The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against using over the counter cold medication for children under the age of 6, recommending instead a cool mist humidifier to relieve cold and flu symptoms.
In addition, cool mist humidifiers also help treat symptoms of croup by soothing the throat and reducing swelling. They also help babies, since they are naturally more dry than adults, and may have more cases of dryness-related problems (like chapped lips and other skin irritations). This is especially good for infants, who have small nasal passages, and may find it easier to breathe with a cool mist humidifier. Breastfed babies, who may find it difficult to feed when they can only breathe through their mouths, may do much better with a cool mist humidifier.
Finally, the people at Crane want to make sure people with cool mist humidifiers know about the necessary regular maintenance. All humidifiers, not only ones made by Crane, need to be emptied daily. They also need to be disinfected once a week, using white vinegar. Here are their words:
It is HIGHLY recommended that the Tank and Base of the humidifier are emptied daily of water, rinsed after each use and disinfected weekly. To disinfect, fill water tank and base with fresh water. Add a few capfuls of white vinegar to water in tank and base. Shake water tank vigorously and let water tank and base sit for 20-30 minutes. When emptying base POUR AWAY FROM FAN INLET. For end of season storage, ensure humidifier is clean and air dried. We want your humidifier spotless for next season.
You can find more Crane items on their website: crane-usa.com. In addition to the cool mist humidifiers, Crane also carries electric fireplace heaters, air purifiers (also animal shaped), warm steam vaporizers, fans, and the coolest night lights your kids will ever have. I got this frog one to review. It's basically a cute plastic frog, with a night light you screw into its belly after it's charged, so the night light doesn't have to be on the wall at night, but can stay on the bed.
